Noted Sufi Music Maestro Ustad Saznawaz Dead

Veteran Sufi music maestro Padma Shri Ustad Ghulam Mohammad Saznawaz, who was instrumental in popularising Kashmiri music, died here today.

He was 74. Saznawaz breathed his last at his ancestral residence at Safakadal in old Srinagar city, officials said.


He died due to old age.

Hailing from the famous Saznawaz Gharana of Kashmir, his contribution was acknowledged at the highest level through the Sangeet Natak Academy Award and the J&K State Award, among others. He was conferred the Padma Shri last year.

The scion of the musical family was able to play all five instruments - santoor, sitar, tabla, saz-e-Kashmir and madham - used in Sufiyana orchestra known as 'Panjhatheyar'.
